Beta haemolytic streptococci and musculoskeletal sepsis in adults
Article Abstract:
The incidence of musculoskeletal sepsis caused by beta hemolytic streptococci (BHS) may be increasing among adults. Musculoskeletal sepsis is caused by the presence of disease-causing bacteria or their toxins in muscle or skeletal tissue. This sepsis can be characterized by a rapidly destructive form of arthritis. BHS are a group of bacteria from the genus Streptococcus that cause different types of diseases in humans and animals. Group A streptococci (GAS) have been the most frequent cause of musculoskeletal sepsis, but cases caused by groups B, C or G are becoming more common. Elderly individuals or those with underlying illnesses have the highest risk of developing this type of sepsis. A devastating form of the disease has still occurred in some young and healthy individuals despite their lack of risk factors. The M1 serotypes of GAS have caused a fatal toxic shock-like syndrome in several young adults.

Musculoskeletal manifestations in hyperlipidaemia: a controlled study
Article Abstract:
Patients with hyperlipidemia may suffer from different types of complications affecting the musculoskeletal system. Hyperlipidemia is a disorder characterized by increased blood levels of lipids such as cholesterol. A study compared the incidence of musculoskeletal disorders among 88 patients with different forms of hyperlipidemia to that among 88 healthy individuals. Sixty-five percent of the patients were suffering from one or more musculoskeletal disorder associated with hyperlipidemia, compared with 11% of the healthy individuals. Patients with adult familial hypercholesterolemia or mixed hyperlipidemia were the most likely to be suffering from tendon xanthoma, or a tumor made up of foam cells filled with lipid, or tendinitis affecting the Achillis tendon. Patients with mixed hyperlipidemia were the most likely to be suffering from oligoarthritis.
