Bill backs commissioning chiropractors as military officers
Article Abstract:
Rep Lane Evans and Sen Strom Thurmond sponsored House and Senate bills that would allow chiropractors to be commissioned as military officers. Supporters of the proposed legislation argued that scientific evidence supports the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment. However, Defense Dept officials contended that adding another class of health professional is inconsistent with plans to cut the size of the armed services. In addition, American Medical Association representatives argued that commissioning chiropractors would not ease the shortage of military physicians because chiropractors lack the medical education necessary to staff hospitals.

Tort reform debated at briefing on health reform
Article Abstract:
Senator John C. Danforth has co-sponsored two bills that would affect the current system of tort liability for physicians. The Medical Injury Compensation Fairness Act would, for example, limit awards for non-economic damages to $250,000. Danforth's other bill, the American Health Quality Act, would help establish alternate dispute resolution systems. Danforth believes that the current system of compensation for malpractice claims is hurting the health care system. Supporters of the current tort system, however, believe that malpractice insurers should be reformed.
