Blood flow through the ductus venosus in singleton and multifetal pregnancies and in fetuses with intrauterine growth retardation
Article Abstract:
Increased blood flow through the ductus venosus may indicate fetal distress. Blood from the umbilical vein flows through the ductus venosus. Researchers used Doppler ultrasound to measure blood flow through the ductus venosus in 55 women with normal pregnancies, 10 with multiple pregnancies and 20 with intrauterine growth retardation. The percentage of umbilical vein blood passing through the ductus venosus was greater in the women with multiple pregnancies or intrauterine growth restriction compared to the women with normal pregnancies.

Structural evidence for mechanisms to redistribute hepatic and ductus venosus blood flows in nonhuman primate fetuses
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine and compare the anatomic and histologic structure of the ductus venosus (DV) and intrahepatic branches of the portal vein of the fetus from two extensively studied species of nonhuman primates. This was done to evaluate their use in the study of function of the critical portion of the fetal vasculature.

A "top-down-approach" to insert catheters into the circulation of fetal sheep using ultrasound B-scan
Article Abstract:
The catheterization of vessels in fetal sheep under ultrasound control is studied. A catheter with guiding wire is introduced into the external jugular vein or carotid artery and advanced caudally and it is found that the major segments of the circulation are accessible from the neck for chronic instrumentation.
