Bolivia's promotores: to be successful, community health workers have to be actively involved with the people they serve and among whom they live

Community health care workers are called 'promotores' and play a vital role in providing medical services. They are chosen from local farmers who are trained in health care procedures. They are effective because local peasants seem to trust them more than professionally trained outsiders.

WHO Dir. Gen. Hiroshi Nakajima believes that the family health approach is effective in disseminating information about health care and disease prevention. According to Nakajima, a partnership between the family and health care professionals should be encouraged.
