Budget proposals target Medicare, Medicaid for massive savings
Article Abstract:
Republican lawmakers are considering making deep cuts in both Medicare and Medicaid in order to make up half of the $1 trillion they believe is necessary to balance the federal budget. Under the Republican plan, Medicare spending between 1995 and 2002 would be reduced by $256 billion, while Medicaid spending would be $175 billion lower during the same period. Other programs being considered for cuts include student loans, veterans' and federal employee health programs, and a number of federal agencies.
