CDM: the best laid plans ...
Article Abstract:
Health and safety professionals can often encounter many difficulties when attempting to prepare a Health and Safety Plan for a construction project in the UK. In many cases, final details of the project are not available until the very last minute, and others involved in the project, such as the contractor and the architect, can be very poor at providing the required information. It is not uncommon for information not to have been provided even after the construction work has been completed. If this happens, then it is very hard for the health and safety advisor to obtain payment from the client.

Everybody needs good neighbours
Article Abstract:
The UK Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has launched a Good Neighbour scheme. The scheme encourage firms to show their commitment to good practice in safety and health matters by sharing their knowledge with other companies. These other companies will include suppliers and customers as well as neighbouring firms. The HSC is aiming the initiative particularly at larger firms which can work supportively with suppliers and contractors to improve standards, often with mutual benefits. Examples of Good Neighbour initiatives include training events, seminars and help with risk assessment.

Hands-on testing
Article Abstract:
Hand-transmitted vibration problems are well recognized in industry and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is sometimes required. Anti-vibration gloves marketed prior to the introduction of ISO 10819 may not meet the vibration reduction standards required. The Health and Safety Laboratory has concluded that the ISO10819:1996 standard test is unsatisfactory and it has developed a modified test, generating assumed protection values. Examples of the application of the alternative test are provided.
