Capital gains and losses
Article Abstract:
Bernard Tomlinson's report on London, England's health services has recommended transferring resources from hospitals to community care. The Government has allocated 170 million pounds sterling to finance the scheme. Improvements in primary health care should reduce pressure on hospital beds so that between 2,500 and 7,000 beds should be surplus to requirements by year 2000. Many acute hospitals will merge or close and review commitees will investigate specialist provision. Relocation to community nursing will necessitate supplementary training for nurses. Proposals may affect between 7,000 and 10,000 nurses.

Split decisions
Article Abstract:
The imminent changes in community care and proposed changes in community nurse education, coupled with government changes to the health service, have caused a split within the Health Visitors' Assn. While some members, including general secretary Catherine Burns, want to preserve traditional health visiting, others are in favour of teaming up with community nurses. The split has been widening since Burns took over from previous general secretary Shirley Goodwin, and tension has been mounting since Burns received a massive vote of no-confidence.
