Prophit and loss
Article Abstract:
Former nursing professor at Edinburgh University, Penny Prophit has denied resigning because of controversy over her academic qualifications. Prophit has been criticised for claiming to hold a doctor of philosophy degree (PhD) and non-registration with the United Kingdom Central Council (UKCC). Prophit maintained she resigned for personal reasons. She only claimed a qualification equivalent to a PhD. Her attempts to register with the UKCC have been obstructed. She considered she had been victimised and made a scapegoat for the possible closure of Edinburgh nursing research unit.

Undermined
Article Abstract:
Civilians in countries at war such as Afghanistan are frequently injured or killed by land mines. Land mines were the cause of injury to 70% of the 2,075 patients with amputations treated by one orthopaedic centre in northern Afghanistan during January 1994-June 1995. Children are particularly vulnerable to injury from land mines, with many unable to walk for several years before receiving the appropriate treatment. Amputations can affect both marriage and work prospects in countries such as Afghanistan and medical staff are required to make difficult decisions.

Lost rights
Article Abstract:
The withdrawal of Section 32 of the General Whitley Council handbook on national agreements on the pay and condition of NHS staff by William Waldegrave, health secretary, has been heavily criticised by the RCN, NUPE, COHSE and NALGO health unions. Under section 32, 70,000 nurses were able to submit clinical grading appeals, but the withdrawal means that from Mar 30 1992, only 38,000 current appeals will proceed, with the remaining 32,000 cases being handled by local managers.
