Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Article Abstract:
Patients suffering from a cardiac arrest who receive cardiopulmonary resuscitation have only a 12.5% chance of surviving for more than one year following the incident. Although great advances in technique and equipment have been made the rate of survival has not changed since the 1960s. Nurses should ensure they are fully trained to apply the latest resuscitation techniques. Before attempting to resuscitate a patient the nurse should consider the individual patient's condition and wishes. A 16-question test on cardiopulmonary resuscitation is included.

Revival techniques
Article Abstract:
The European Resuscitation Council has established guidance on basic and advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Respiratory and cardio-respiratory arrest guidelines concentrate on breathing and chest compression. Nurses should use airway adjuncts rather than mouth to mouth resuscitation. The precordial thump should only be used for advanced life support. Electrical defibrillation is essential for ventricular fibrillation (VF). Evidence has shown Lignocaine ineffective for contolling VF. Specialist nurses should learn defibrillation techniques.

Resuscitation decisions - why should we talk to patients?
Article Abstract:
The decision to 'do not resuscitate' (DNR) a patient should be discussed with the nurses, patient and the patient's relatives, according to new guidelines which have been issued recently. Although the consultant still has ultimate responsibility for this decision, it should be written down by the doctor on admission. and communicated with all concerned. The ethical and legal implications are discussed.
