Careering ahead
Article Abstract:
Nurses who leave nursing for another profession are not motivated by money, according to a survey of about 30 nurses between 29-56 years of age now working in different professions. Almost all those interviewed said they had needed greater independence, more individual patient contact, and better working hours. Although many were sad about leaving hospital wards, they felt they could not go on as management support was lacking. Many of the interviewees found new self-esteem in their new jobs. All found their nursing training an advantage in their new roles. Case studies of various former nurses are also presented.

Off target
Article Abstract:
The UK government's chief medical officer Dr Kenneth Calman has admitted that 'The Heath of the Nation' White Paper's target of cutting smoking amongst 11- to 15-year-olds by a third by 1994 is unlikely to be met. Quoting evidence from Norway, director of anti-smoking group ASH, David Pollock, said that teenage smoking would fall considerably if cigarette advertising were to be banned. The RCN and the British Heart Foundation are also calling for a ban on cigarette advertising. Doubts about the feasibility of achieving other 'The Health of the Nation' targets have also been expressed.

Places for dying?
Article Abstract:
Nursing homes should not be allowed to care for people with terminal illnesses unless adequate standards of expertise can be offered, according to a report published by the National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts (NAHAT). The report recommends that the level of patients in each nursing home be specified by health authorities, and that the homes provide qualified staff and involve the patient's doctor.
