Caring for children in a hospice setting
Article Abstract:
Clinical problems associated with caring for children in a hospice include feeding problems, sleep problems, seizures and pain control. Thirty-five percent of 127 terminally ill children surveyed were suffering pain, particularly in the joints and muscles, with much of the pain treated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Thirty one percent of the children experienced sleep problems and 60% suffered from seizures. All the children were speech impaired. Families valued the experience of the nursing staff, particularly during bereavement.

Cinderella no more: The Mildmay Hospice is emerging as the leading light among AIDS centres with the launch of a new brain-impairment centre this week
Article Abstract:
The Mildmay Hospice is located in an unfashionable east-London backwater but is emerging as a leading light among AIDS centres, with the opening of a new brain-impairment day centre. Barbara Dicks, a former chief nursing office at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, is the new director, and she believes it is important to know the market, preserve quality and respond quickly, as in any other small business. There is a demand for AIDS services as only around 50% of patients are suitable for drug combination therapy.
