Value-added benefits: Nutritional supplements are used routinely to aid clinical outcome
Article Abstract:
Nutritional supplements are widely available in hospital and a survey looked at their use in hospitals throughout Wessex. It found that supplements may be used without clear criteria and regular monitoring, and there was lack of good documentation. The expenditure on supplements in some cases may have been better diverted into ensuring that patients are weighed, improving ward staffing during mealtimes and into patient meals themselves.

Changing urine testing protocols through audit
Article Abstract:
A pilot study in a medical assessment unit for the elderly showed that the use of Multistix 10 SG and urine clarity assessment led to a rise in culture-positive urine samples and a fall in the number of culture-negative samples. An audit was then undertaken to reduce the number of culture-negative urine samples, and to restrict the use of antibiotics for urinary tract infections.
