Chicken pox vaccine promises protection, cost savings
Article Abstract:
A newly approved vaccine against chickenpox called Varivax is likely to be widely used by pediatricians. Manufactured by Merck and Co, it will be available in May 1995 at a price of $39 per dose. Although most parents view chickenpox as just an inescapable childhood illness, a recent report by the Center for Disease Control shows that chickenpox also carries direct and indirect costs of approximately $384 million annually. The American Academy of Pediatrics is drawing up guidelines for the vaccine's use, and it is expected to be incorporated into recommended vaccination schedules almost immediately.

Rising hopes, rising costs
Article Abstract:
Advances in HIV and AIDS treatment are being impeded by rising costs. Medicaid and state AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) pay for 50% to 75% of prescriptions for antiretrovirals such as protease inhibitors. Enrollment in ADAPs has skyrocketed from 50,000 nationwide in 1994 to about 70,000 in 1995. However, many are hopeful that the need for increased funding will increase access to new drugs.

Doctors asked to be more aggressive in herpes screening
Article Abstract:
The American Social Health Assn is recommending that physicians become more vigilant in screening their patients for genital herpes. One in five Americans over 12 years old has the disease, which can spread to other organs and become life-threatening. Physicians are advised to obtain patients' sexual histories to assess risk factors and increase testing.
