Child molestation and pedophilia: an overview for the physician
Article Abstract:
Sexual abuse of children is a pervasive problem that has serious clinical, social, moral and legal implications. Between 100,000 and 500,000 children per year are thought to be molested in the United States. Sexual abuse of children cna be detected by most doctors, and in fact, all doctors are required to report such cases. Child molestation and pedophilia can have serious long-term consequences for the victims, as well as for the perpetrator and even for the professional if a diagnosis is missed. The causes behind child molestation vary among perpetrators and each perpetrator can commit hundreds of acts on hundreds of children. Various treatments for perpetrators include medications, psychotherapy and behavior therapy, and although such treatments may help reduce the frequency of child abuse, primary prevention may be the key to reducing sexual abuse.

The concepts of stress and stress system disorders: overview of physical and behavioral homeostasis
Article Abstract:
Individuals have physiological responses that maintain their equilibrium when confronted with physical or emotional stress. The concept of stress and the body's response to stress has existed since the beginning of medical science. A stress system coordinates the body's physiological response to stress. The two main components of the stress system are corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and the autonomic and sympathetic nervous systems. Activation of the stress system causes behavioral and physiological changes that increase an individual's chances of survival. Components of the stress system interact with the brain, endocrine glands and immune system. Over-activity and under-activity of the stress system can cause different disorders. Different biochemical imbalances cause over-activity or under-activity of the stress system.

The controversy over radiation safety: a historical overview
Article Abstract:
Concern over the hazards of radiation has existed almost since the discovery of x-rays and natural radiation in the 1890s. The first recommended 'tolerance doses' were established in 1934, resulting from research triggered by misuse of x-rays and radium. In the 1950s and early 1960s concern centered around fallout from nuclear testing. Later the risks of nuclear power became the focus of the debate, particularly after the accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. It has been pointed out that the general public receives most of its exposure to radiation from medical applications. The question of what constitutes an acceptable exposure level will not likely be settled soon.
