Childhood leukemias
Article Abstract:
The treatment of childhood leukemia varies depending on the type of leukemia. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood leukemia. Acute myeloid leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia are less common. Chemotherapy may cure up to 70% of children with ALL, but fewer than 40% of children with acute myeloid leukemia. New therapies are needed for children with leukemia who do not respond favorably to chemotherapy. Bone marrow transplants can improve symptoms. Other potential ways to improve the effect of transplants includes using immunostimulants. Human hematopoietic growth factors can stimulate the recovery of the immune system following chemotherapy. Potential effective therapies may result from inserting a tumor-suppressor gene in leukemia cells caused by genetic abnormalities.

Language ability after early detection of permanent childhood hearing impairment
Article Abstract:
Speech and oral language abilities are assessed in children with bilateral permanent childhood hearing impairment and the relationship of these measures to the timing of confirmation of hearing impairment and to the availability of universal screening of newborns. The results have shown that early detection of childhood hearing impairment is associated with higher scores for language but not for speech in midchildhood.
