Choose life
Article Abstract:
Basic life support (BLS) aims to maintain adequate ventilation and circulation until staff are able to reverse the underlying cause of cardiac arrest. BLS is unlikely to successfully resuscitate a patient on its own. Resuscitation requires attention to the safety of both nurse and patient, responses should be checked, and the airway opened. If the patient is not breathing a defibrillator will be needed. Defibrillation is affected by paddle position, shock sequence and transthoracic impedance.
