Choosing the Best Strategy to Prevent Childhood Iron Deficiency
Article Abstract:
The best way to prevent iron deficiency in children is to use an accurate diagnostic test for iron deficiency and provide nutritional support to all children identified. Iron deficiency anemia in children virtually disappeared in some populations when the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children was passed in 1972. Many studies have shown that iron deficiency anemia impairs the brain and other organs. Even when their deficiency is corrected, these children still lag behind. A 1999 study found that the reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) was more effective than traditional measurements in identifying children with iron deficiency or iron deficiency anemia.
