Clinical staff development: a two-way solution
Article Abstract:
Considerable work has been undertaken over recent years at Blackpool Victoria Hospital NHS Trust on new staff development packages which include academic credits. In collaboration with University College of St Martin, Lancaster, England, it was possible to set up a four-module distance learning course worth 60 level 2 diploma-level CAT points. This involves workshops, in which students play a vital role, and has a number of quality mechanisms. A flexible, hospital-based approach has proved very beneficial to staff.

Safety fears curb older patients' independence
Article Abstract:
The independence of older patients is being threatened by concerns by nurses about safety, according to a two year study by the ENB on nursing education. Pre and post-registration course curricula covered older people's independence but did not show nurses how to weigh the benefits of independence against acceptable risk. There is a need to encourage patients to do things for themselves, and the ENB is planning to look into the effects of nursing education on practice in the long term.
