Co-carcinogenesis and field cancerization: oral lesions offer first signs
Article Abstract:
The reddish mouth sores of dental patients who smoke and drink heavily may be early signs of cancer. Two cases of seemingly minor dental infection prompted more testing following routine dental care. One male patient was 65 years old, had a history of heavy smoking and drinking, and was unaware of a dental sore in his mouth. Further examination revealed four squamous cell carcinomas (malignant tumors) in the left inner cheek, throat and lungs. The mouth tumor was surgically removed and the other cancer sites were treated with radiation therapy. The second patient was a 49-year-old man who also drank and smoked a lot. He complained of teeth abscesses but had not noticed a sore on the left side of his mouth. Cancer diagnosis of his larynx was confirmed and subsequently treated with radiation therapy. The interconnection between alcohol and tobacco use and oral cancer is not entirely clear but further testing of high-risk dental patients with sores may be wise.

Dentistry's role in tobacco control
Article Abstract:
Many smokers visit a dentist every year but most dentists do not take advantage of this opportunity to advise these patients to quit smoking. This is important because smoking and the use of chewing tobacco are two of the biggest risk factors for mouth and throat cancer.
