Competence: the shot heard around the nursing world
Article Abstract:
Competence is a requirement of the 1991 Nursing Care standards, and guidance on it is provided by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Skills checklists are not required, although documentation of competence is required. The three types of competence are affective, psychomotor and cognitive, with emphases on age-specific patient service. Questions on these topics are answered.

Substance abuse in nursing: forming policies
Article Abstract:
Nursing managers should form policies on substance abuse, and this can be done in three stages. These stages are resource identification, committee establishment and task force member education. The policy should include early intervention, prevention, impaired practice identification, evaluation, treatment and reentry to nursing. The policy creation at one large medical center is discussed.
