Stat nursing - the final analysis
Article Abstract:
Stat nursing may alleviate short-term shortages of nursing staff. One university medical center pioneered stat nursing, and describes their six year experience. Stat nurses provided care in eight of the center's nine specialty intensive care units (ICUs). An analysis of the stat nursing service revealed that stat nurse productivity was 184%. Stat nurses were paid 20% more yet saved 64% of one full time equivalent nurse. Stat nurses experienced less downtime and had increased efficiency.

Lean, mean and stupid!
Article Abstract:
Employment policies and rules should not be applied rigidly, but should instead be treated as guides in decision-making. An example of the misuse of rules occurred when two nurses were fired after refusing to work a double shift. They were given only five minutes notice, and both would have had to arrange care for their young children. The case raises questions concerning the ethics of mandatory overtime, as well as the purpose and role of employment rules and policies.

Revising nursing documentation to meet patient outcomes
Article Abstract:
Changes in an intervention unit's documentation procedures allowed nurses to spend more time with patients while meeting the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's standards. One study showed nurses spent approximately 31% of their time with patients and as much as 11% on charting. The revised system used flow sheets to document the nursing diagnosis and interventions, which in turn benefitted patients.
