Computerized patient record network not far off
Article Abstract:
The Department of Health and Human Services' Work Group on Computerization of Patient Records has released a report stating that an investment of $54.4 million could finance the creation of a national patient record network within 10 to 15 years. However, the report concluded that such a network would probably not reduce costs. The report added that lack of agreement on standards for information transmission would prove the biggest challenge in creating such a network.

Internet infuses new life into data networks
Article Abstract:
The healthcare industry is quickly using the Internet to link employers, payers, physician offices, clinics, hospitals, labs and government organizations into proprietary networks that are more nimble. Traditional networks took a long time to develop and were often too cumbersome. Rapid market changes and tough competition have brought about community health information networks that are quicker to implement, more focused and are open to Internet-based technologies.

Record keeping or record giving?
Article Abstract:
There are over 70 firms that sell computerized patient record systems for physicians. These firms include hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, managed care firms and integrated delivery systems.
