Correction of junctional epidermolysis bullosa by transplantation of genetically modified epidermal stem cells
Article Abstract:
Epidermal stem cells from an adult patient affected by LAM5-[beta]3-deficient JEB were changed with a retroviral vector expressing LAMB3 cDNA (encoding LAM5-[beta]3), and used to prepare genetically corrected cultured epidermal grafts. Retroviral integration site analysis revealed that the regenerated epidermis is maintained by a defined repertoire of transduced stem cells, which shows that ex vivo gene therapy of JEB is feasible and leads to full functional correction of the disease.

Skeptics demand duplication of controversial fertility claim
Article Abstract:
A research group at the Massachusetts General Hospital reveals that stem cells in the bone marrow can travel through the blood to regenerate occytes in a mouse ovary thus producing new egg cells within days. The team transplanted blood from normal female mice engineered to produce green fluorescent protein to mice that are sterilized by chemotherapy, a genetic mutation or both.

Ex vivo glycan engineering of CD44 programs human multipotent mesenchymal stromal cell trafficking to bone
Article Abstract:
The significance of the CD44 glycoform bearing [alpha]-2,3-sialyl modifications expressed by the human mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in curing skeletal diseases in humans is discussed. The CD44 glycan is found to be extremely useful for trafficking the MSCs to the bone.
