Article Abstract:
A research nurse describes how a travel scholarship to visit Madras in south India has helped in her work in Leicester, where a quarter of the population is of Asian origin. She sought to find out why patients with chronic illness such as ulcerative colitis in India appeared to cope better than her Asian patients in Leicestershire. There is often little privacy within the household in India and problems are shared. All patients with ulcerative colitis received support from family and close friends, and although stoma care equipment is less sophisticated than in the west, patients are well informed.

Qualitative nursing research: the issues and pitfalls
Article Abstract:
Nursing research is increasingly moving away from quantitative research methods, towards qualitative techniques, to describe and give meaning to life experiences. Participant observation is a popular way of collecting data in qualitative research. Quantitative research methods concentrate mainly on issues of cause and effect.
