Distinguishing characteristics
Article Abstract:
The English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (ENB) introduced its Framework for Continuing Professional Education in October 1991. The initiative is aimed at providing a flexible development tool for practitioners wishing to continue their professional education and to ensure that such education matches the needs of employers. The framework is designed to assess professional development through the use of 10 key characteristics, which all practitioners must be able to achieve if they are to provide the quality of care demanded.

The 'what' and 'when' of advocacy
Article Abstract:
The need for nurses to sometimes act as an advocate, assuming responsibilities for people who are unable to assume responsibilities themselves and pleading their cause, raises a number of issues. While advocacy is not appropriate in cases when patients who are clearly able to make decisions for themselves decide to refuse treatment that could benefit them, nurses do have a duty to protect their patients' interests. A study plan and activities are included.
