About 40% of women responding to a survey indicated that they have suffered from weight discrimination. Discriminatory acts included being excluded from work-related social events and receiving negative comments from supervisors. The degree of discrimination increased with the degree of overweight.

Women hairstylists and colorists are still finding difficulty in succeeding in a business where men appeared to be the leading players. One explanation is that men hairstylists receive more substantial support from the major hair-care-product manufacturers, which are mostly owned by men.
