Drug maker launches institute to help doctors communicate
Article Abstract:
Miles Inc has developed the Miles Institute for Health Care Communications, a nonprofit organization to help facilitate communication between physicians and their patients to improve health and drug compliance and reduce malpractice suits. The institute comes out of half-day workshops that Miles has conducted for almost 10,000 physicians since 1989. The workshops teach physicians communications skills such as the 'four Es': engaging patients in dialogue, expressing empathy, educating patients and enlisting them in their own care.

Helping doctors out of illness maze
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association's (AMA's) Physician Health Foundation, established in 1991, addresses physicians' health problems ranging from disabilities to HIV-infection. The Foundation plans to raise money to provide direct aid to physicians by funding programs administered at the state level. The AMA has also taken a strong stand on substance-impaired physicians and holds that their colleagues have an ethical obligation to report them.
