Effect of awareness of a randomized controlled trial on use of experimental therapy
Article Abstract:
Many doctors may use an experimental treatment that is being evaluated even for patients who are not participating in any study of that treatment. This was found to occur in Canada at a time when apheresis was being evaluated for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and myeloma case nephropathy. Researchers found that local doctors began using apheresis to treat these conditions even in patients who were not enrolled in any of the studies.

Long-term renal prognosis of diarrhea-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression
Article Abstract:
About 12% of all children who develop hemolytic-uremic syndrome caused by E. coli Shiga toxin will develop end-stage kidney failure or die, according to researchers who analyzed 49 studies covering 3,476 children in 18 countries since 1950. Among those who survive, 25% will have long-term kidney damage. Children with the most severe symptoms will have the worst long-term prognosis.

Continuous positive airway pressure for treatment of postoperative hypoxemia: A randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to determine the effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure as compared to standard treatment in preventing the need for intubations and mechanical ventilation. The findings indicate that continuous positive airway pressure may decrease the incidence of endotracheal intubations and other severe complications in patients.
