Effect of estrogen plus progestin on global cognitive function in postmentopausal women: a randomized controlled trial
Article Abstract:
Hormone replacement therapy does not protect postmenopausal women from developing intellectual deficits as they age and may even increase their risk, according to a study of 4,532 women. This study is part of the Women's Health Initiative study, which found that hormone replacement therapy may do more harm than good. This landmark study caused many doctors to tell women to take hormone replacement therapy only to treat the symptoms of menopause, not to prevent heart disease, osteoporosis, or Alzheimer's disease.

Effects of estrogen plus progestin on health-related quality of life
Article Abstract:
Estrogen replacement therapy containing progestin may not have any impact on a woman's quality of life beyond preventing hot flashes, according to a study of 16,608 postmenopausal women. It may prevent sleep disorders in some women, but overall it had no positive effect on quality of life. This conclusion came from the Women's Health Initiative, which is the same study which found that hormone replacement therapy may do more harm than good.

Symptom experience after discontinuing use of estrogen plus progestin
Article Abstract:
Women's symptoms and management strategies after stopping the intervention in a large estrogen plus progestin trial is described. The results revealed that more than half of the women with vasomotor symptoms at randomization to active medroxyprogesterone acetate (CEE+MPA) reported these symptoms after discontinuing use of the study pills.
