Effect of stored-blood transfusion on oxygen delivery in patients with sepsis
Article Abstract:
Transfusion of red blood cells does not appear to improve oxygen uptake in patients with sepsis. Oxygen delivery and utilization are abnormal in patients with sepsis, which is a condition resulting from bacterial infections. Red blood cell transfusions are often used to improve oxygen delivery in these patients, but the effectiveness of this procedure is not known. Twenty-three patients with severe sepsis who were receiving mechanical ventilation were given red blood cell transfusions within 48 hours of developing sepsis. Oxygen uptake was measured immediately before and after transfusion, three hours after transfusion and six hours after transfusion. Although oxygen delivery increased immediately after transfusion, red blood cell transfusion was not associated with an increase in oxygen uptake throughout the body or in individual organs.

Diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by DNA amplification of tissue obtained by fine-needle aspiration
Article Abstract:
Detection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in tissue samples from patients with metastatic head and neck cancer could indicate that the primary tumor is nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Tissue samples from 41 patients with head and neck tumors were analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify viral DNA. Samples from seven patients diagnosed with either primary or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma contained EBV DNA. Samples from two patients with suspected metastatic cancer also had EBV DNA, and both patients developed nasopharyngeal carcinoma within one year of the study. Tissue samples taken from patients with other types of cancer contained no EBV DNA. The use of PCR to detect EBV DNA in lymph nodes or metastatic head and neck cancer can confirm a diagnosis of primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Aspiration pneumonitis and aspiration pneumonia
Article Abstract:
It is important to distinguish between aspiration pneumonitis and aspiration pneumonia because the treatments are different. Both involve the inhalation of body fluids into the lungs but in the case of pneumonitis, the fluid comes from the stomach whereas in pneumonia, it comes from the mouth and throat.
