Efficacy of the anti-CD22 recombinant immunotoxin BL22 in chemotherapy-resistant hairy-cell leukemia
Article Abstract:
An antibody against the CD22 adhesion molecule on B cells appears to be effective in treating hairy-cell leukemia that does not respond to chemotherapy. Eleven of 16 patients who received the antibody went into remission and two had a partial response.

Immunotoxin therapy for cancer
Article Abstract:
Immunotoxin therapy is a new approach to cancer treatment that uses a monoclonal antibody attached to a bacterial toxin that can destroy cells. A monoclonal antibody will seek out a specific protein (antigen) on cell membranes. If the antibody is attached to a toxin, it will carry that toxin to the cell. One of the first immunotoxins was Pseudomonas exotoxin (PE) attached to the monoclonal antibody OVB3. Although it was effective in killing human ovarian cancer cells in culture, it caused liver damage in mice. Consequently, PE was modified through recombinant DNA technology so it would not be so toxic. It was coupled to a monoclonal antibody that reacts to many types of cancer, including colon, stomach, lung, breast and ovary. This immunotoxin showed little toxicity in monkeys, and caused complete tumor regression in mice. One problem with immunotoxin therapy is that patients may produce antibodies to the immunotoxin.

Immunotoxin treatment of cancer
Article Abstract:
Immunotoxins, proteins used for cancer treatment are composed of an antibody fragment linked to a toxin. The immunotoxin binds to a surface antigen on a cancer cell, penetrates the cell by endocytosis and destroys it.
