Endotoxin-induced atrial natriuretic factor release: in vivo and in vitro studies
Article Abstract:
Endotoxin seems to stimulate the release of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF). Researchers studied the effect of endotoxin on the release of ANF from the heart in a group of dogs. Some received endotoxin and some received a saline (salt) solution. Endotoxin reduced blood pressure and increased heart rate. Endotoxin increased blood flow in the kidneys, which then returned to normal. Other kidney functions were not affected by endotoxin. Endotoxin caused the release of ANF from the heart atria, but only at high pressures.
