The role of nurses in promoting testicular self-examination
Article Abstract:
Testicular cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the 15-35 age group in England and Wales, and since testicular cancers can often be halted if they are treated early, testicular self-examination (TSE) on a monthly basis has been recommended. However, while the incidence of testicular cancer has been rising steadily since 1965, just 30 of the 103 deaths from testicular cancer in England and Wales in 1993 were in men aged 15-34. Young men who notice any lumps in their testicles should consult their doctor but recommending TSE for men aged 15-18 has the potential for creating unnecessary anxiety.

For safety's sake
Article Abstract:
The Royal College of Pathologists has investigated the risks of HIV virus transmission between health workers and hospital patients. The report emphasises that the virus is transmitted largely through sexual contact and risks of transmitting the virus in hospital are low. However, precautionary measures should be taken to further reduce risk. Management policies should emphasise prevention through safe clinical practice. Health workers exposed to blood and body fluid should wear protective clothing. HIV infected health workers should avoid invasive procedures.

Promoting health and safety programmes in the workplace
Article Abstract:
An occupational health nurse (OHN) has a major part to play in accident prevention by identifying health hazards, establishing ways of preventing hazards and undertaking health surveillance. OHNs can also offer training about workplace hazards and supervise training in first aid, as well as maintaining routine and statutory records.
