The ethics of placebo-controlled trials -- a middle ground
Article Abstract:
A placebo-controlled trial should be permitted if there are good reasons for its use and the risk to the patients who receive the placebo can be minimized. A placebo is an inactive substance against which a drug is compared. However, the patients who receive the placebo are essentially being denied a treatment for their disease. This withholding of treatment has raised serious ethical problems for medical researchers who conduct clinical trials.
