Effect of esophageal ligation on amniotic fluid volume and urinary flow rate in fetal sheep
Article Abstract:
The amount of amniotic fluid is tightly regulated by the fetal membranes, according to a study in sheep. Researchers surgically obstructed the esophagus of fetal lambs so they could not swallow amniotic fluid, but fluid levels did not increase. This shows that the membranes absorb some of the fluid.

Fetal esophageal ligation induces expression of vascular endothelial growth factor messenger ribonucleic acid in fetal membranes
Article Abstract:
Vascular endothelial growth factor increases in the membranes of fetuses whose esophagus is blocked, according to a study in sheep. This causes amniotic fluid to be absorbed by the membranes, preventing the buildup of excess amniotic fluid. Normally, the fetus swallows excess amniotic fluid.

Increased urinary flow without development of polyhydramnios in response to prolonged hypoxia in the ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
The fetal membranes can absorb excess amniotic fluid, according to a study in sheep. This is one of the ways the amount of amniotic fluid is regulated, since too much amniotic fluid or too little amniotic fluid can have adverse effects on the fetus.
