Fighting back with a badge of honour
Article Abstract:
Health professionals in the US are putting increasing pressure on hospital managers not to increase the use of non-nursing staff for tasks which are perceived as not requiring special skills. Managers argue that this trend is being made necessary by severe financial pressures, but health professionals feel that it is reducing standards of patient care to dangerously low levels. The American Nurses' Association has responded by promoting a badge which confirms for patients when they are being cared for by a fully qualified nurse.
