Folate and cardiovascular disease: why we need a trial now
Article Abstract:
The National Institutes of Health should fund a study on the effectiveness of the B vitamin folate in reducing the incidence and mortality of heart disease. Several studies have shown that elevated blood homocysteine can increase the risk of heart disease and that folate can lower homocysteine levels. Folate is safe to consume and the coming fortification of foods with folate probably will not substantially change blood levels in the US population. Few drug companies appear to be interested in testing folate because it could not be patented.
