Food for thought on choking hazards
Article Abstract:
Choking on food and non-food objects has been the fifth leading cause of accidental death among children below 15 years of age. Candy, gum and coins were the objects responsible in two thirds of the non-fatal cases. Suggested tips for caregivers feeding children include watching them while they eat, and cutting food articles into small bite-sized pieces. Many commonplace items are mentioned as potentially hazardous to small children, and the procedure is given for giving first aid if cases of choking do occur.
