Anti-obesity effects of alpha-lipoic acid mediated by suppression of hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase
Article Abstract:
Alpha-lipoic acid (alpha-LA) decreases hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity and causes profound weight loss in rodents. Findings of the study reveal that Hypothalamic AMPK is important in the central regulation of food intake and energy expenditure and that alpha-LA exerts anti-obesity effects by suppressing hypothalamic AMPK activity.

The effect of leptin on Lep expression is tissue-specific and nutritionally regulated
Article Abstract:
A study in rats shows that increased blood levels of leptin suppress Lep gene expression in adipose tissue but increase Lep gene expression in skeletal muscle. Lep autoregulation was affected by changes in nutrient availability.
