Freedom to care
Article Abstract:
The independent nursing home sector provides quality, long-term care for the elderly, particularly those suffering from dementia, that the UK National Health Service is unwilling to provide. Private nursing homes provide excellent nursing care along with a homely atmosphere, and are subject to many rules and regulations. Since most of the residents' expenses are paid by the Dept of Social Service, private homes not meeting patient requirement may be forced to close down. Many nursing staff working in the private sector were formerly with the NHS service.

Profit before people?
Article Abstract:
Private nursing homes for the elderly is an expanding market. However, the existence of the smaller type of nursing home which provided a homely atmosphere and a high standard of nursing care is being threatened by health-care companies, which are setting up large nursing homes with an impersonal environment. Elderly patients requiring long-term care but without financial resources may find their choice of home limited to the cheapest, which may find them isolated from friends and family.

Restless spirits
Article Abstract:
Great care should be taken to make an accurate assessment of wandering behaviour in elderly people before a decision is made about the correct action to take. Wandering often has no single cause, and can vary from day to day and at different times of day, and patients should therefore ideally be observed over a whole week. Common causes of wandering include infection, discomfort from pain, thirst, hunger and changes to medication. Possible solutions are considered.
