Growth hormone secretion in HIV-positive versus HIV-negative hemophilic males with abnormal growth and pubertal development
Article Abstract:
Hemophilic HIV-positive boys may be at increased risk for abnormal physical and sexual development independent of their diet or metabolism. Measurements of physical and sexual maturity were performed over a 3.5-year period on 207 HIV-positive and 126 HIV-negative hemophilic boys aged six to 19 years of age. Nearly all of the patients had normal insulin-like growth factor I levels and thyroid function. More HIV-positive than HIV-negative boys had delayed sexual maturity, abnormal growth patterns, low testosterone levels, and low growth hormone levels. Stimulated growth hormone levels increased with increasing CD4+ counts.

Development of T-cell lines expressing functional HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins for evaluation of immune responses in HIV-infected individuals
Article Abstract:
The development of a T cell line that expresses HIV envelope proteins may help scientists understand how the antibodies the body produces against HIV work. Researchers created a human T cell line whose cells expressed the p41 and p120 envelope glycoproteins on their surface. They were capable of forming syncytia, which are clumps of cells often seen in the blood of HIV-infected individuals. Blood samples from 9 HIV-infected people contained antibodies that reacted to the cell line and killed the cells.
