Historical changes in the objectives of the periodic health examination
Article Abstract:
The focus and content of the periodic health examination may be highly influenced by the objectives defined by its strongest supporters at the time. Historical changes in the nature of the annual physical can be seen to reflect the goals of its strongest advocates. Beginning as a search to advance medical knowledge and prevent disease, the periodic examination has evolved to a screening procedure for specific diseases. Health care industries, life insurance companies, and other groups influence the ultimate objectives and focus of the annual examination, and should be continually reassessed.

New methods for drug delivery
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical companies are developing new ways to deliver drugs but many physicians believe the methods may be too expensive. Polymers, liposomes and cyclodextrins are all methods of delivering drugs that rely on naturally occurring chemicals. Most of these systems are created to deliver the drug directly to its target. Antibodies targeted to specific antigens can assist this process when they are chemically attached to the drug. Viruses are being used to deliver genes to correct a genetic deficiency in cells. An insulin pump could revolutionize the treatment of diabetes.
