Improved survival with preoperative radiotherapy in resectable rectal cancer
Article Abstract:
Preoperative radiation treatment appears to improve survival rates and reduce cancer recurrence in patients with rectal cancer. Researchers randomly assigned 1,168 patients with rectal cancer to receive radiation treatment one week before surgery or surgery alone. At 5 years, the cancer had recurred in 11% of those who received preoperative radiation treatment and 27% of those who had surgery alone. Fifty-eight percent of those in the preoperative radiotherapy group were alive compared to 48% in the surgery group. At 9 years, survival rates were 74% and 65%, respectively.

Preoperative Radiotherapy for Resectable Rectal Cancer: A Meta-analysis
Article Abstract:
Radiation therapy may improve the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer if given before surgery. However, in a review of 14 clinical trials that analyzed preoperative radiation therapy, the benefit was relatively small. Further research may identify those patients most likely to benefit.

Preoperative radiotherapy combined with total mesorectal excision for resectable rectal cancer
Article Abstract:
Preoperative radiotherapy does not improve survival rates in patients with rectal cancer who have surgery, but it can reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,805 patients who had surgery only or surgery preceded by radiotherapy.
