Treatment of dual diagnosis patients: a relapse prevention group approach
Article Abstract:
Case studies of adjunctive group psychotherapy for substance-abusing patients with major psychiatric disorders such as bipolar, schizophrenia, schizoaffective, psychotic deprssion and atypical psychosis are presented. Six of eight patients receiving the adjunctive psychotherapy had periods of stable abstinence. The success of the program was attributed to a psychoeducational approach that focuses on drug abuse causes and consequences, recovery principles and relapse prevention strategies.

Article Abstract:
The gender differences in cocaine use and response to desipramine and lithium carbonate are assessed. Results showed that there were no gender differences in depression rates or symptom levels. Female cocaine abusers had more severe drug problems upon enrollment to the study but they were more successful as males in the randomnized clinical trial and more successful at six-month follow-up.
