Inconsistent pH tests put babies at risk
Article Abstract:
Two nurses in the wake of new guidance from the UK's patient safety watchdog reported that clinicians must use pH paper instead of litmus paper to check the placement of nasogastric (NG) tubes in newborns. The nurses warn that inconsistent readings of different pH paper put babies at risk and also that their own independent laboratory-based trials have shown that the colored bands on some brands were difficult to read against the pH scale, and could potentially cause delays in starting artificial feeds.
