Modulation of rat uterine contractility by mast cells and their mediators
Article Abstract:
Mast cells are activated during labor, and may regulate uterine contractions. Mast cells produce histamine, several interleukins, tumor necrosis factor, and other substances.

Induction of premature labor and delivery by allergic reaction and prevention by histamine H(sub 1) receptor antagonist
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to find out if type I hypersensitivity can induce preterm labor and delivery that may be prevented by the administration of an H(sub 1) receptor antagonist. Findings indicate that women with bronchial asthma have a 2-fold increase in the risk of premature labor and delivery.

Structural and functional comparison of mast cells in the pregnant versus nonpregnant human uterus
Article Abstract:
A study is carried out to characterize uterine mast cells and investigate uterine muscle strips contractile responses to challenge with an allergen in nonpregnant and pregnant women. Sensitized isolated pregnant and nonpregnant human uterine tissue is capable of responding to antigen challenge with strong myometrical contractions and this ability along with the increased density of mast cells in pregnant tissues as compared with nonpregnant tissues indicates a possible role for mast cells in mediating uterine contractility in pregnancy.
