Inflammation, atherosclerosis, and ischemic events - exploring the hidden side of the moon
Article Abstract:
Ischemia appears to have many causes and the proper treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Ischemia occurs when the blood supply to part of an organ is reduced. A minor reduction can cause angina when it occurs in the heart and a complete blockage of blood flow causes heart attacks and strokes. However, many physiological processes can interrupt blood flow, including blood clots, constrictions or spasms of blood vessels and atherosclerosis. A 1997 study found that a protein produced during inflammation was linked to strokes and heart attacks. This indicates that inflammation may also be involved in ischemia.

Long-term exposure to air pollution and incidence of cardiovascular events in women
Article Abstract:
A prospective cohort of postmenopausal women was studied to investigate the association of their long-term exposure to particulate matter of less than 2.5 [mu] m in aerodynamic diameter with their cardiovascular events. Results indicated that long-term exposure to such fine particulate air pollution is associated with incidence of cardiovascular disease and death among postmenopausal women, and exposure differences within cities are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Adverse events, including death, associated with the use of 1,4-butanediol
Article Abstract:
1,4-butanediol can cause agitation, aggressiveness, respiratory depression, unconcsciousness and even death. This substance is used as a dietary supplement by bodybuilders, and to treat depression and insomnia. It is converted by the body into gamma-hydroxybutyrate, which probably causes most of the adverse effects.
