Inflammation in atherosclerosis
Article Abstract:
This review examines the role of inflammatory mechanisms in connecting dyslipidaemia to atheroma formation. Research shows that early atherogenesis is characterized by leukocyte recruitment and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, inflammatory pathways may even lead to thrombosis, which in turn causes myocardial infarctions and strokes.

A link between diabetes and atherosclerosis: glucose regulates expression of CD36 at the level of translation
Article Abstract:
Research has shown that increased translation of macrophage CD36 under high glucose conditions creates the mechanism for accelerated atherosclerosis in diabetics. Macrophages showed increased expression of CD36 at the cell surface after an increase in the efficiency of CD36 mRNA.

Vascular endothelial growth factor enhances atherosclerotic plaque progression
Article Abstract:
Research presented concerns the treatment of atherosclerotic heart patients with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to promote angiogenesis. Findings suggest that VEGF increases bone marrow CD34+/Flk-1+ cells and impacts plaque formation and stability.
