Innate immunity
Article Abstract:
The components of the innate immune system include antigen presenting cells, macrophages, and the alternative complement pathway. The number of cell receptors in the innate immune system is very small because they are encoded by genes. However, they have evolved to recognize common structures present on most micro-organisms. For this reason, they are often the first cells to recognize a micro-organism. The cell ingests the organism, digests it, and then presents proteins from the organism on the cell surface to trigger T cell activation. They also produce immune system proteins that trigger T cell activation.

The immune system
Article Abstract:
A detailed description of the immune system is presented. The innate immune response consists of dendritic cells, natural killer cells, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells. The innate immune response also involves proteins such as complement, acute-phase proteins, and cytokines. The acquired immune response consists of T and B cells that can remember the structure of foreign proteins and destroy them. T cells act directly and B cells produce antibodies.

The immune system, part 2
Article Abstract:
A detailed description of the immune response is presented. Topics include lymphoid tissue, the molecular aspects of the immune response, the activation and regulation of lymphocytes, antibodies, and cytokines. Transgenic mice and knockout mice have been used to determine the function of many genes involved in the immune response. These animals can also be used as models of autoimmune disease and immunodeficiency diseases.
