Relation between HLA DRB1 alleles and corticosteroid resistance in giant cell arteritis
Article Abstract:
Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genetic types may be associated with giant cell arteritis (GCA) and resistance to corticosteroid treatment. GCA is a form of artery inflammation, often diagnosed in the temporal artery along the side of forehead. Researchers compared the HLA genotypes of 41 patients with GCA and 384 similar healthy volunteers, and found that the DRB1*04 genetic allele was present in 49% of GCA patients and only 20% of healthy research subjects. Among GCA patients who became resistant to corticosteroid therapy within two years, 89% had the genetic allele.

Corticosteroid irrigation of parotid gland for treatment of xerostomia in patients with Sjogren's syndrome
Article Abstract:
Irrigation of the parotid glands with a corticosteroid solution may effectively relieve dry-mouth in patients with Sjogren's syndrome. Sjogren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease that causes markedly diminished tear and salivary flow, leading to a dry mouth and eyes. Researchers compared 31 patients treated with direct irrigation of the salivary parotid glands with either saline or a 2 mg/ml prednisolone sodium succinate solution. Irrigation with the corticosteroid drug caused a substantial increase in salivation, which persisted for an average of eight months.
